China retaliates against Trump by implementing tariffs on energy imports and initiating investigation into Google

China has recently announced that it will be imposing tariffs on various US products amidst escalating trade tensions between the two countries. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that it would be implementing a 15% tariff on coal and liquified natural gas, as well as a 10% tariff on crude oil, farm equipment, and large-displacement cars. This move comes in response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 10% tariff on Chinese products, which went into effect on the same day as China’s announcement.

In addition to the tariffs, China has also launched an antitrust investigation into US company Google. The State Administration for Market Regulation stated that Google is being investigated on suspicion of violating antitrust laws, adding another layer of tension between the US and China.

These actions by China come shortly after President Trump agreed to halt tariffs on Mexico and Canada for 30 days in exchange for increased border security measures. The President had also imposed tariffs on China over the weekend, citing concerns over the production of precursor chemicals for fentanyl.

The countermeasures taken by China are set to go into effect on February 10th, further escalating the already strained relationship between the two economic powerhouses. President Trump has expressed his intention to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the near future, possibly to discuss a resolution to the ongoing trade dispute.
