Explosion near national train company office in Athens causes no injuries

A bomb was planted near the offices of Hellenic Train, Greece’s main railway company, in central Athens. The incident caused concern in the busy district, but thankfully no injuries were reported. An anonymous call to a newspaper and news website warned of the bomb, which exploded within 40 minutes. Police cordoned off the area and found an explosive device in a bag near the Hellenic Train building.

This event comes amid public anger over the 2023 Tempi railway disaster, Greece’s deadliest, where 57 people were killed and many injured due to a collision between two trains. Criticism of the government’s response to the crash has grown, especially as the second anniversary recently passed. The victims were predominantly young people returning to university classes after a holiday.

The bomb scare has added to tensions in the area, with residents and tourists being kept away from the scene. The authorities are investigating the incident, aiming to ensure the safety and security of the public. This event highlights the ongoing challenges facing Greece’s transportation sector and the importance of addressing safety concerns promptly.
