Early Voting in Virginia Begins Friday

Early in-person voting for Virginia’s upcoming elections is set to commence on Friday, May 3, 2025, and will continue through Saturday, May 17, 2025. This initiative allows registered voters to cast their ballots ahead of the official Election Day on Tuesday, May 21, 2025.

Voting Locations and Hours

Voters can participate in early voting at their local general registrar’s office. For those unable to visit during regular business hours, some jurisdictions may offer additional satellite locations and extended hours. It’s advisable to check with your local registrar’s office for specific details.

Voter Identification Requirements

To vote early in person, registered voters must present a valid form of identification. Acceptable IDs include:

  • Virginia driver’s license
  • Military ID
  • Work ID
  • Student ID

Absentee Voting

Absentee ballots will be mailed to military and overseas voters, as well as those who have requested them. Registered voters can request an absentee ballot either in person, by mail, or online. The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail is May 10, 2025. Absentee ballots must be postmarked no later than May 21, 2025, and received by noon on May 24, 2025.

Voter Registration

The deadline to register to vote for the May 21, 2025, election is April 30, 2025. Voters can register online or at their local registration office, public library, or DMV. Virginia also offers same-day registration, allowing individuals who miss the registration deadline to register and vote at their polling location on Election Day. Please note that same-day registrants will cast a provisional ballot, which will be processed and counted once the registration is verified.

Election Day

On Election Day, polls will open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Voters in line by 7 p.m. will be permitted to cast their ballots. The ballot will include local positions and races for the U.S. House of Representatives.
