UVA Honors Top Athletes at 2024-2025 Hoos Choice Awards
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The University of Virginia celebrated its top athletic talent at the 2024-2025 Hoos Choice Awards, where Connor Shellenberger and Gretchen Walsh took home prestigious honors. Walsh received the IMP Award, recognizing her as the top female athlete, while Shellenberger earned the WINA Award for top male athlete.
The awards reflect athletic performance from April 2024 to March 2025. Although Shellenberger has not played for the Virginia Men’s Lacrosse team in nearly a year, his remarkable contributions during the championship season sealed his second consecutive WINA Award. The Charlottesville native played a pivotal role in leading the team to its third Championship Weekend in four years, highlighted by an unassisted, double-overtime game-winner against Johns Hopkins. Over the season, Shellenberger tallied 84 points, including a team-high 52 assists, and was named the nation’s most outstanding attackman. He holds Virginia’s records for career points and assists and is the only four-time first-team All-American in the program’s history, as well as a three-time finalist for the esteemed Tewaaraton Award.
Gretchen Walsh, meanwhile, continued to shine in her sport, winning her second Honda Sport Award in Swimming & Diving. Competing in the Paris Olympics, she secured gold in the 4 x 100 relay and the 4 x 100 medley relay, and won an individual silver in the 100 fly, setting an Olympic record with a time of 55.38 seconds. Back at UVA, she clinched three individual national titles, contributing to the team’s fifth successive NCAA championship.
As both athletes prepare to leave UVA, their exceptional legacies will undoubtedly resonate within the university and beyond.
