Press Release: Foal of Champion American Pharoah Arrives Amid Concerns
Leesburg, VA – The highly anticipated foal of renowned racehorse American Pharoah has finally arrived, but the joy is mixed with caution given the mare Philanthropic’s challenging foaling history. Owned by Ann Mudge Backer of Smitten Farm, Philanthropic was referred to the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center (EMC) on February 1 for close monitoring ahead of her expected delivery.
Philanthropic, an 8-year-old thoroughbred, has faced difficulties in past pregnancies. Her first foal was stillborn, and during her second labor, she successfully birthed a healthy foal. However, two years ago, complications arose when she experienced dystocia—difficulties arising from the foal’s positioning—on day 355 of her pregnancy. Typically, thoroughbred gestation lasts about 340 days.
Upon arrival at the EMC, Philanthropic appeared bright and alert, showing no immediate signs of distress. An ultrasound confirmed a healthy fetus with a normal heart rate. Fortunately, she delivered a robust chestnut filly in the early hours of the morning, just 344 days into her pregnancy, requiring minimal assistance from the skilled veterinary team.
“Watching a foal take its first breath makes every sleepless night worth it,” remarked Krista Estell, clinical associate professor of equine medicine at the EMC.
Despite the successful birth, Philanthropic encountered challenges as she initially refused to let her newborn filly nurse. The care team at the EMC is closely monitoring the situation to ensure both mother and foal thrive in the days to come. As one of the most anticipated foals in the equestrian world, all eyes remain on this promising offspring of a Triple Crown legend.
