Reps. Pressley and Bush, alongside activists, call on Biden to commute death sentences

Congressional Democrats, including Rep. Ayana Pressley and Rep. Cori Bush, are urging President Joe Biden to use executive powers to commute the sentences of federal death row inmates. They pointed out that Biden had promised to end the federal death penalty during his 2020 campaign. There are currently 40 men on federal death row who could have their sentences commuted to life in prison.

Advocates fear that the incoming Trump administration will resume federal executions, which had been paused under Biden. They argue that the death penalty is unfair, racist, and disproportionately used against Black, brown, and low-income families. The activists emphasize that Biden has the power to save lives by granting clemency.

The push for death row commutations is seen as an opportunity for Biden to define his legacy as he prepares to leave office. Advocates also mentioned rumors of preemptive pardons by Biden for individuals targeted by Trump, including his son Hunter, on federal charges. They believe that by taking action on death row commutations, Biden can demonstrate his commitment to criminal justice reform and protection of marginalized communities.

Pressure is mounting on Biden to act quickly, as he only has a limited time left in office. Representatives at the press conference stressed that granting clemency is not just a tool for Biden, but a responsibility to save lives and address systemic injustices in the criminal justice system.
