South Korea police conduct raid on President Yoon’s office following martial law declaration

South Korean police have raided President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office in connection with his declaration of martial law, which led to protests and a political crisis in Asia’s fourth-largest economy. Yoon is being investigated for potentially committing the crime of insurrection, which carries the death penalty and does not provide presidential immunity. Former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun, who was involved in the rebellion, attempted suicide while in custody.

Yoon had suspended civilian rule, sending special forces to parliament before being forced to rescind the decree. Protests erupted outside the National Assembly, with calls for Yoon’s impeachment and vandalism of ruling party lawmakers’ offices reported. Key officials, including police commissioners, were taken into custody, as the investigation into the martial law declaration accelerated.

Lawmakers have appointed a special counsel to investigate the case, with the ruling party considering a resignation roadmap for Yoon. Opposition parties plan to continue pressing for impeachment, with more officials being banned from leaving the country and some being arrested. Yoon narrowly avoided impeachment in parliament and is facing increasing pressure to step down. The opposition claims that a potential transfer of power to the prime minister and party chief by Yoon’s ruling party constitutes a “second coup”.

With tensions still high and the political situation in South Korea remaining uncertain, further developments are expected as the investigation into the martial law declaration continues, and calls for impeachment grow louder.
